Poul Cadovius nacque il 27 settembre 1911 a Frederiksberg, Danimarca, e si formò come sellaio e tappezziere prima di trovare la sua vocazione nel design di mobili. Il suo background artigianale gli conferì una sensibilità pratica e orientata alla soluzione dei problemi che avrebbe definito tutta la sua produzione: mobili che lavoravano sodo, si adattavano ai loro utenti e scomparivano nelle pareti piuttosto che dominare una stanza.

Nel 1945 fondò Royal System, un'azienda manifatturiera creata per portare sul mercato la sua visione del design del dopoguerra. Tre anni dopo, nel 1948, completò quello che sarebbe diventato il suo contributo distintivo al design scandinavo: il sistema di scaffalature Royal System. Il sistema utilizzava guide orizzontali in legno montate direttamente a parete, da cui staffe e scatole modulari in teak o palissandro potevano essere appese in quasi tutte le configurazioni. Libri, articoli da bar, una scrivania pieghevole, vetrine, tutto poteva essere combinato e riorganizzato senza attrezzi. In un'epoca in cui gli appartamenti scandinavi diventavano sempre più piccoli e lo spazio di archiviazione era un problema reale, il Royal System offriva una risposta veramente nuova. Divenne quasi immediatamente un successo di esportazione internazionale.

Cadovius continuò a sviluppare sistemi modulari per tutti gli anni '50 e '60. Seguirono System Ultra nel 1957 e System Cado nel 1960. Per gestire la crescente domanda di produzione, acquisì il produttore di mobili danese France & Sons e lo ribattezzò CADO. Al suo apice, l'azienda impiegava 300 persone ed esportava in oltre 30 paesi. Tra i suoi collaboratori alla CADO figuravano Grete Jalk, Arne Vodder e Finn Juhl, rendendola una delle imprese di mobili più significative del design danese del dopoguerra.

I suoi successi furono riconosciuti con una medaglia d'argento all'XI Triennale di Milano nel 1957 e una medaglia d'oro alla 10ª Fiera Internazionale degli Inventori di Bruxelles nel 1961. Nel corso della sua carriera accumulò oltre 400 brevetti, una cifra che riflette non solo la sua inventiva ma un impegno costante a risolvere problemi di design in modo sistematico e rigoroso.

Cadovius morì nel marzo 2011 all'età di 99 anni, avendo vissuto abbastanza a lungo da vedere i suoi sistemi di scaffalature diventare oggetti da collezione sul mercato secondario.

Oggi, nelle case d'asta nordiche, sono state messe in vendita 87 opere attribuite a Cadovius, con pezzi di stoccaggio e scaffalature che costituiscono la chiara maggioranza. Il Royal System raggiunge costantemente i prezzi più alti, con configurazioni individuali che raggiungono 31.011 SEK al top. Set di scaffalature a parete in teak da 17 e 19 pezzi sono stati venduti rispettivamente per 22.451 SEK e 20.536 SEK. Il suo lavoro appare più frequentemente presso Palsgaard Kunstauktioner e Rheinveld Auktionen, riflettendo una forte domanda sia nei mercati collezionistici scandinavi che tedeschi.
