Ketterer Kunst was founded in Stuttgart in 1954 by Wolfgang Ketterer and is now led by his son Robert, who took over in 1994 and built the house into Germany's market leader for modern and contemporary art. According to artprice.com, Ketterer ranks among the top 10 auction houses worldwide by turnover - the only family-owned firm in that group.
The house has long been the foremost auction authority on German Expressionism, a movement whose post-war rehabilitation it helped drive through specialist sales. This expertise extends to Classical Modernism, post-war and contemporary art, and prints. In June 2024, Alexei von Jawlensky's 'Spanische Tanzerin' sold for 8.3 million euros, the highest result in the company's history. The house has recorded over 54 hammer prices in the millions.
Ketterer Kunst operates from Munich with additional locations in Hamburg, Berlin, and Cologne. A separate rare books and manuscripts division adds scholarly depth to the main auction program. The combination of specialist expertise, consistent record-level results, and long-term family stewardship gives the house a distinctive position in a market otherwise dominated by corporate competitors.
