Finarte was founded in 1959 by the Milanese banker Gian Marco Manusardi to assist collectors in the purchase and sale of art. The house focused on specialized auctions from the outset, covering old masters, contemporary art, silver, jewelry, numismatics, and porcelain. Finarte quickly became the leading auction house in the Italian market and in 1970 was listed on the Milan Stock Exchange, one of the first auction houses in the world to achieve a public listing.

The company expanded with venues in Rome (1972) and a second Milan location (1981), but financial difficulties led to bankruptcy in 2011. In late 2014, a group of Italian investors purchased the Finarte name and brand to relaunch the house as a renewed venture "created by collectors for collectors." In 2017, the relaunched Finarte acquired Minerva Auctions, a historic Rome-based house headquartered in Palazzo Odescalchi.

Today, Finarte operates from Via Paolo Sarpi 8 in Milan and covers fine art, jewelry, fashion, watches, wines, and classic cars. Its indexed catalog on PAPI shows particular strength in collectibles, paintings, weapons, and photography, reflecting the breadth of its specialist departments.
