Aguttes is the fourth-largest French auction house and the largest independent one, with no outside shareholders. Based at 164 bis Avenue Charles de Gaulle in Neuilly-sur-Seine, just west of central Paris, the house operates 17 specialist departments covering fine art, Asian art, wine and spirits, classic cars, jewelry, watches, design, photography, manuscripts, and more. With offices across France and in Brussels and Geneva, Aguttes draws roughly half its buyers from outside France.
Founded in 1974 in Clermont-Ferrand by Claude Aguttes, who still serves as president, the house relocated to Neuilly-sur-Seine in 1995 to better serve the global market. The business remains family-run, with Claude's three children actively involved: Philippine Dupre la Tour leads the lifestyle and luxury department, Charlotte Aguttes-Reynier heads paintings and Asian art, and Maximilien Aguttes drives transformation and development. A team of 60 supports them across all locations.
Aguttes has built a particularly strong reputation in Asian art, where paintings by Sanyu have fetched up to 9.69 million EUR, and made global headlines when the Einstein-Besso relativity manuscript sold for 11.6 million EUR in 2022, a world record for a scientific autograph. In 2018, Aguttes became the first independent French auction house to exceed 50 million EUR in annual sales.
