Sven Wejsfelt

Born Sven Johansson in Lidköping on 29 October 1930, Sven Wejsfelt began his career in ceramics at age sixteen when he entered the Rörstrand porcelain factory. There he trained as a porcelain painter and turner, working under Carl Harry Stålhane and Gunnar Nylund. In 1953, he moved to the Gustavsberg porcelain factory, where he would remain for the next 55 years. Because four other Sven Johanssons were already employed at the factory, he adopted the surname Wejsfelt.

At Gustavsberg, Wejsfelt spent his first two decades working closely with Stig Lindberg. Their collaboration lasted from 1953 to 1970 and provided Wejsfelt with a thorough grounding in form, glaze chemistry, and the particular demands of production and studio work. It was not until 1977 that he began producing work under his own name.

Wejsfelt's thrown vessels belong to the Chinese-influenced Scandinavian stoneware tradition. His pieces are characteristically thin-walled, with refined proportions and glazes that reveal deep technical knowledge. Cornflower blue, hare's fur glaze, pale oxblood, and soft yellow were among his signatures. He had a particular gift for miniatures. Alongside these vessels, he developed the "Stim" series of ceramic fish. Modeled on species found in Swedish waters, the Stim fish are slip-cast in porcelain or stoneware and finished with naturalistic glazes.

His work is held by the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum in New York, and the International Museum of Ceramics in Faenza.

Wejsfelt continued working at Gustavsberg until 2008, the year before his death on 17 March 2009. On the auction market, his work appears with 105 items across Nordic houses, concentrated at Stockholms Auktionsverk Sickla, Crafoord Auktioner Stockholm, and Formstad. His "Stim" fish command the highest prices, led by a fish sculpture that sold for 5,050 EUR.
