Stig Henry Wernheden was born on September 5, 1921, in Limhamn - the limestone-quarrying coastal suburb of Malmö that would remain both home and recurring subject throughout his life. He died there on November 3, 1997, and is buried in the memorial grove at Limhamns kyrkogård.
Before turning to painting as a discipline, Wernheden worked as a cliché etcher from 1938 to 1950, a trade that placed him in daily contact with image reproduction and the technical side of printed pictures. That craft background, with its attention to surface and line, seems relevant to the graphic work he would later produce. In 1948 he began formal studies in painting with Arwid Karlson and Helge Nielsen at the Essem-skolan in Malmö, continuing until 1953. He supplemented his education through extended travel - France, Yugoslavia, Spain, Italy, Austria and Switzerland - absorbing European modernism at first hand rather than through reproductions.
His early painting was grounded in the representational: still lifes, figure studies, and landscapes rendered in oil and watercolour with a sober but observant eye. The limestone quarry at Limhamn, the fishing sheds along the local shore, the flat coastal light of Malmöhus county - these motifs appear repeatedly across his output, giving the body of work a strong sense of place. As the 1950s progressed, the work moved steadily toward abstraction, and by the late 1950s that shift was fully underway. He continued working in both modes - the landscape as felt presence rather than documentation.
His prints, in wood and linoleum, extended the same concerns into a medium with its own logic of reduction and contrast. In 1961 he was selected for the graphics triennial in Grenchen, Switzerland - one of the more competitive international venues for print at the time - a mark of how his graphic work was regarded beyond Sweden.
Wernheden exhibited widely throughout his career. Solo shows included Krognoshuset in Lund, venues in Limhamn, and Teaterhotellets gallery in Malmö. He showed alongside the painter Olle Hallén at Sturegalleriet in Stockholm and with Per Lindblad in Köping. He also participated in regular group exhibitions with the Skåne Art Association in Malmö and Lund, the Swedish Public Art Association, and the Stockholm salon at Liljevalchs konsthall. His work entered the collections of Moderna Museet, Malmö Museum, Ystads konstmuseum, the Snus- och Tändsticksmuseum, and Malmö rådhus.
On the auction market, Wernheden appears most frequently at Garpenhus (18 of 45 recorded items), followed by Markus Auktioner and Limhamns Auktionsbyrå - houses with strong Skåne presences that reflect both the regional character of his reputation and the geographic concentration of collectors familiar with his work. Almost all lots are paintings, with five listed under the broader art category. Top realized prices include a Kalkbrottet i Limhamn in oil at SEK 2,461, a Bergsby Kreta at EUR 1,381, and a Motiv från Sibbarp at SEK 1,300. The Kreta subject points to the European travels that fed his practice, while the Limhamn and Sibbarp titles confirm that the immediate Malmö coastline remained a constant reference point.
