Sigge Berggren

0 actieve items

Karl Sigurd Berggren - known throughout his career as Sigge - spent his life working within a few kilometres of where he was born in Malmö in 1911. That rootedness in southern Sweden never limited his ambitions: he trained across Europe, studying in Sweden, Germany, Copenhagen, and Paris before settling back in Malmö, where he remained until his death in 1968.

Berggren worked almost exclusively as a sculptor, and bronze was his preferred material. His output centered on the human figure - particularly the female nude and portrait busts - rendered with a quiet confidence that placed him squarely within the Scandinavian Modern tradition. That tradition valued clarity of form over ornament, and Berggren's work reflects it: bodies observed with care, surfaces given weight and presence without unnecessary embellishment.

His work found its way into the public fabric of his home city. He created reliefs for Östra Sjukhuset in Malmö, and in 1950 he completed a portrait relief of the Swedish author Frank Heller for his gravestone in Lund. These commissions speak to the respect Berggren commanded locally - public sculpture in mid-century Sweden was not casually assigned.

Despite a career spanning several decades, Berggren has remained a regional figure rather than a nationally prominent one. His death in 1968 came before the wave of renewed interest in Swedish mid-century applied and fine arts that followed in later decades. He is buried in the family grave at Limhamns Cemetery in Malmö.

At auction, Berggren appears consistently as a sculptor - all 22 items in our database are categorised under Sculptures. The market is anchored in the Swedish south: Auktionshuset Thörner & Ek, Crafoord Auktioner Malmö, and Stockholms Auktionsverk Malmö account for the bulk of appearances. The top recorded sale is a Dansös (Dancing Girl) at approximately 4,879 EUR, with signed bronze figures of standing and seated women making up the majority of lots. Prices are modest but steady, consistent with a sculptor whose work remains sought after by collectors of Scandinavian mid-century art.
