Olof Walfrid Nilsson was born on 12 October 1868 in Norra Råda, a rural parish in the forested interior of Värmland. He spent nearly his entire adult life in Karlstad, dying there on 23 February 1956 at the age of 87 - a career spanning more than half a century.

His working life fell into two distinct registers that rarely overlapped. As a decorative painter he contributed to the interiors of buildings in Gothenburg and left his most visible public legacy in Karlstad itself: wall and ceiling paintings in the staircase of the Sockerslottet, and a ceiling painting in the ballroom of the Grand Hotel, completed in 1904. These commissions placed him squarely within the tradition of Swedish architectural painting at the turn of the century, when public spaces were expected to carry allegorical or ornamental programs.

But it is the second register - the easel paintings - for which Nilsson is remembered today. He was drawn repeatedly north and west, to Lapland and to the mountain zones of Jämtland and Norrbotten, where the scale of the landscape demanded a different kind of attention. His oil paintings from these territories tend toward the expansive: wide lake systems under pale summer skies, fells in winter light, Sami camp sites at the foot of treeless ridges. The mood is often quiet and slightly removed, as if the painter was describing a world indifferent to the viewer's presence. He also worked in watercolor, producing a body of work with French and Italian motifs that has attracted less attention but reflects the standard study travels of his generation.

Nilsson's geographic roots stayed present in the work. Värmland and the Västgöta border landscape appear alongside the more dramatic northern subjects, and the auction record confirms that local Karlstad audiences have remained his primary market. His work is held at the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, and at museums in Karlstad, Linköping, and Uddevalla.

At auction, Nilsson appears regularly in Swedish salerooms. The 44 recorded lots are concentrated at Karlstad Hammarö Auktionsverk (30 lots), which accounts for most of the activity, with smaller presences at Metropol, Stockholms Auktionsverk Sickla, and Bukowskis. The category split - 29 paintings, 14 drawings - reflects the dual nature of his practice. Top recorded prices include "Sommarkväll, Undersåkersdalen" at SEK 7,907, "Östra bron Karlstad" at SEK 4,200, and a winter scene at SEK 1,900. The price range suggests solid regional demand rather than a national market, consistent with an artist whose reputation has remained anchored to western Sweden.
