Ole Ahlberg was born in 1949 in Denmark and has lived and worked in Copenhagen throughout his career. He debuted in the 1970s, developing a style rooted in hyper-precise oil painting that draws heavily on the Dutch and Flemish vanitas tradition. Where the old masters used peeled lemons, hourglasses, and skulls to meditate on mortality, Ahlberg builds a contemporary equivalent: silk curtains, porcelain figurines, clouds, swans, and scantily clad figures rendered with trompe l'oeil conviction.
What makes Ahlberg's work immediately recognizable is the friction he introduces by placing flat, outline-drawn characters from Hergé's The Adventures of Tintin directly into these meticulously painted scenes. The comic strip figures -- Tintin, the Thompson Twins, Captain Haddock -- appear as intrusions from another pictorial world, questioning the nature of representation itself. The tension between photorealistic oil paint and the bold, graphic line of the bande dessinée is both formally inventive and conceptually pointed.
In 2001, as Ahlberg was opening an exhibition in Brussels attended by the wife of the Danish prime minister, the copyright holder Moulinsart served legal notice demanding the offending works be removed. Ahlberg refused. The case went to court, and the judge ruled in his favour, establishing that parody is protected under Belgian and international copyright law. The episode brought his work considerable attention beyond Scandinavia and has since been cited in discussions of appropriation art and intellectual property.
Ahlberg works across oil painting, lithography, and giclée printing. He is represented by galleries including Pop International Galleries and has been associated with the Imaginary Realism art collective. His exhibitions include Art Copenhagen and Gallery L'Oeil in Brussels.
On Auctionist, Ahlberg appears across 33 lots from Scandinavian houses including Bruun Rasmussen in Aarhus and Lyngby, and Svendborg Auktionerne. His oil paintings from 1990 lead his auction results, with top prices around 12,000 DKK.
