Nils Severin Lynge Hansteen (27 April 1855, Mo i Rana - 11 October 1912, Kristiania) was a Norwegian painter whose career unfolded across the final decades of the nineteenth century, a period when Norwegian landscape and marine painting commanded wide international attention. Born in the remote northern county of Nordland, Hansteen followed an unusual path into art, first training as a mechanical engineer at a technical college in Trondheim before turning decisively toward painting.

His formal artistic education took shape through a succession of respected teachers and institutions. He studied under Knud Bergslien and Morten Müller at the Bergslien School of Art in 1873 and with Peder Cappelen Thurmann at the Royal Drawing and Art School in Kristiania. The pivotal influence on his artistic direction came in 1876 when he joined Hans Gude's studio in Karlsruhe - Gude, himself one of the defining figures of Norwegian Romantic landscape painting, steered Hansteen firmly toward marine subjects. Further periods of study followed in Munich (1877-1880), Italy (1880-1881), and Copenhagen (1887-1892), where he also acquired skills in copper engraving.

Hansteen settled in Kristiania around 1881 and remained there for most of the rest of his life, with the notable exception of his Copenhagen years. His mature work is grounded in naturalism, with recurring motifs drawn from Norway's coastal waters - fishing harbors, sailing vessels and steamships in open sea, cliff-lined shores, and the particular quality of northern light on water. He also painted forest and summer landscapes, though the sea remained his central subject.

His work entered the permanent collections of Trondheim Kunstmuseum, Kunstforeningen in Drammen, Kunstmuseene in Bergen, and the National Gallery of Norway (now Nasjonalmuseet), which holds at least two of his canvases including Snøtykke (1890). He was also painted by his peers: Erik Werenskiold and Michael Ancher both produced portraits of him, marking his standing within the Nordic artistic community of his era.

On the auction market Hansteen is handled exclusively by Grev Wedels Plass Auksjoner in Oslo, where all 48 of his recorded lots have appeared. Prices have ranged from a few hundred to well over 100,000 NOK, with the top results driven by dated coastal scenes from the 1880s: "Loshavn, outer Oslofjord 1884" reached 165,000 NOK, "Fiskevær 1879" sold for 130,000 NOK, and "Norsk havn 1889" achieved 100,000 NOK. These results confirm consistent collector demand for his dated, site-specific marine works from this period.
