Marcello Pane

The story of Marcello Pane begins in 1899 in Borgo Orefici, the historic goldsmiths' quarter of Naples. The family opened for the trade in precious goods in a district that had been the centre of Neapolitan goldsmithing since the medieval period, and the business quickly established itself with a clientele that extended beyond Italy to the courts of Europe. That early reach set the tone for a company that has always positioned itself at the intersection of artisan tradition and broader market ambition.

The interwar decades brought structural changes to the European jewelry trade. The spread of machine-made chains and mass-produced precious goods in the early 1920s reshaped buyer expectations and compressed price points, and the young Marcello Pane - the second-generation steward of the company at the time - moved to incorporate these new production possibilities while maintaining the hand-finished quality that distinguished Neapolitan work. The result was a range that could serve both the luxury end and a growing middle-class market for fine silver.

Through four generations the business has remained a family affair, with each generation inheriting not just the trade but a specific design sensibility rooted in the Campanian goldsmith tradition: sinuous forms, fine surface treatments, and a preference for materials - sterling silver, 18-karat gold plating - that reward close inspection. The collections are refreshed regularly while keeping continuity with this formal language. Pieces are entirely hand-crafted in Italy, a point of difference the brand maintains against mass-market competition.

In 1996 the company moved from Borgo Orefici to the Il Tari goldsmiths' centre in Marcianise, near Caserta - a purpose-built hub for the Campanian jewelry district hosting over 400 companies and drawing some 400,000 trade visitors annually. The move gave Marcello Pane greater production capacity and a direct connection to the industry infrastructure of the broader Campania goldsmith cluster. The brand has since become a regular participant at Vicenzaoro, Italy's principal jewelry fair in Vicenza; at the January 2026 edition the company held ten display windows at the fair entrance and was featured in a TG5 broadcast dedicated to the show.

On Auctionist, Marcello Pane appears entirely through Kaplans Auktioner in Stockholm, with 38 lots recorded and 6 currently active. The pieces offered are characteristic of the brand's core range: necklaces, bracelets, earrings, rings, and bangles in gilt sterling silver. Top sale prices include a gilt silver necklace at 1,500 SEK and a bracelet at 1,300 SEK, reflecting the accessible price tier at which the brand's silver work trades in the Nordic secondary market.
