Lisa Rinnevuo

0 actieve items

Lisa Rinnevuo grew up in Tullinge, a suburb south of Stockholm, and spent time in New York before settling back in Hägersten. That transatlantic stretch shows in the work: geishas with elaborate hair and kimono patterns share wall space with jazz musicians glimpsed in the low light of Harlem clubs. The contrast is not a contradiction - it is the point. Rinnevuo draws from wherever she finds an image that holds something, and builds her own visual vocabulary out of those crossings.

She works with spray paint and acrylic, often on large canvases, and the process is deliberately unplanned. No preliminary sketches, no mapped-out composition - the work develops as she moves, which gives the finished pieces an energy that more structured approaches tend to sand away. The faceless figures she returns to most often invite that same openness: without a fixed expression or identity, they remain available to whoever is looking.

The geisha became her most sustained subject. Rinnevuo has described the word itself - which translates roughly as artistic person - as part of the attraction, alongside the visual richness of the kimono and the elaborate arrangements of flowers in the hair. The calligraphic weight of the sprayed black lines connects these images back to something closer to Zen practice than Western figure painting. That thread runs through much of the work: gesture, immediacy, a preference for the mark over the plan.

Rinnevuo debuted at Södra Galleriet in Stockholm around 2001-2002 and went on to show at Stockholm Art Fair in 2003 and 2005, with further solo exhibitions at Södra Galleriet in 2004 and 2007, and at KONSTOCHFOLK in 2010. Her prints - color lithographs produced in numbered editions, sometimes of 195 or 225 copies - brought her work to a wider audience and have been consistently present at Swedish auction houses. On Auctionist, 20 items are recorded, with the top result being a color lithograph titled "Whisper" sold for 2,200 SEK and a "Manhattan" edition reaching 1,300 SEK. The work appears most frequently at Stockholms Auktionsverk and Helsingborgs Auktionskammare, and is categorized primarily under Art and Prints - a distribution that reflects both the graphic accessibility of the editions and the continued appetite for her painted originals.
