Hugo Öfverström was born on November 13, 1900, in Kungälv, a town on the west coast of Sweden where the Nordre älv meets the archipelago of Bohuslän. That landscape - granite skerries, open water, harbors filled with wooden fishing boats - would define much of his artistic output across five decades.

He enrolled at Valand's painting school in Gothenburg around 1919, studying under Birger Simonsson, one of the influential teachers who shaped the Gothenburg school of colorism in the early twentieth century. By 1922 he had completed his formal training and in 1923 departed for the United States, where he remained until 1928. The American years broadened his outlook and sharpened his eye for light and color, influences that folded back into his mature work after his return to Gothenburg.

Back in Sweden, Öfverström opened a shop and workshop in Gothenburg where he sold his paintings alongside furniture decorated in faux lacquer in the Chinese style - a commercial venture that reflected both the decorative arts sensibility of the period and a practical entrepreneurial streak. Within a few years he wound down the commercial side of the business to concentrate entirely on painting.

His style settled into a personal variant of impressionism, built around his affection for the Bohuslän coastline. Fishing villages, harbor reflections, sailboats at anchor, the play of afternoon light on water - these were his recurring subjects. He handled them with a loose, assured brushwork that kept close to observed reality while allowing color to carry emotional weight. He also painted gardens, flowering trees, and inland landscapes, but the sea remained his most consistent reference point. He exhibited at Liljevalchs in Stockholm in 1921 and 1934 and participated in the Liljevalchs Höstsal, alongside showings at Valand. His work entered the collections of Göteborgs Konstmuseum and Moderna Museet in Stockholm.

On the auction market, Öfverström's paintings appear most frequently at Göteborgs Auktionsverk, which accounts for 13 of his 37 recorded appearances on Auctionist. His coastal and marine subjects command the highest prices: a kustmotiv med segelbåt reached 4,200 SEK and a kustlandskap brought 3,300 SEK. Flowering tree and garden compositions have also performed solidly, with one blommande träd i landskap selling at 3,263 SEK. His work trades consistently in the 1,750-4,200 SEK range, reflecting steady regional demand for his west-coast impressionism.
