Helena Turpeinen was born on 10 December 1918 in Finland. After secondary school she enrolled at the Central School of Industrial Design to study model design, graduating in 1943. That same year she began a double working life: mornings at Taito, a lamp manufacturer partly owned by the lighting designer Paavo Tynell, and afternoons at Arabia, Helsinki's leading ceramics factory. Through Taito she met Paavo Tynell, and in 1947 they married.
In 1946 Tynell joined Riihimaen Lasi, one of Finland's major glassworks, located about 70 kilometres north of Helsinki. She would remain there for three decades, becoming one of the factory's most productive designers. By the late 1950s she had developed the textured, tactile surface language that became her signature. The design that secured her place in Finnish glass history is the Aurinkopullo, the sun bottle, introduced in 1964 and produced until 1974. Its textured surface catches light in a way that shifts with viewing angle, and it was made in colours ranging from clear and amber to rare uranium glass.
Alongside the sun bottle, Tynell produced a steady stream of series through the 1960s: Pala (1964), Emma (1968), Aitanlukko (1968), and the Vanha Kartano range. She also created glass sculptures, including the Rantakivet (Shoreline Rocks) series and a set of animal figures for a Noah's Ark collection.
In 1973 Paavo Tynell died. Three years later, Riihimaen Lasi ceased fine glass production. Rather than retire, Tynell moved to Germany and spent roughly a decade designing lighting for Glashutte Limburg. Her bubble-glass pendants and wall sconces from this period are now collected in their own right. She died on 18 January 2016, at 97.
On the Nordic auction market, 103 items by Tynell are recorded on Auctionist. Glass dominates with 56 lots, followed by ceiling lights (15) and other lighting (7). Hagelstam & Co in Helsinki leads with 12 lots, followed by Thorner & Ek (11). A Norrsken vase reached 20,356 SEK, a Castello object sold for 9,531 SEK, and a Fagel figure from the Noaks Ark series fetched 4,188 EUR.
