Harry Thomander

Harry Oscar Clarence Thomander was born on 9 June 1916 in the Stockholm parish of Brännkyrka, but Örebro claimed him before he reached school age: the family moved to the city in 1921, and he would remain there, painting it from nearly every angle, for the rest of his life.

His training was thorough and spread across two cities. He first studied at Viktor Lindblad's atelier in Örebro in 1933, then moved on to Harald Ericson's painting school in the same city before travelling to Stockholm to attend the Royal Institute of Fine Arts (Kungliga konsthögskolan) from 1938 to 1943. His teacher there was Isaac Grünewald, the Swedish Matisse-influenced colorist who had studied under Matisse himself in Paris and whose influence on a generation of Swedish painters was decisive. Thomander supplemented his formal education with study trips to France, Spain and Yugoslavia.

The Spanish journeys show clearly in his output. Alongside the Örebro cityscapes for which he is best known, Thomander produced a body of Mediterranean coastal paintings - sunlit harbors, whitewashed walls, boats at rest - that stand apart from the cooler palette of his Swedish subjects. His still life work forms a third strand: flowers, fruit and domestic objects arranged with an attention to light that echoes his Grünewald training without becoming imitative.

For Örebro itself, Thomander painted with a chronicler's persistence across five decades. The Svartå river corridor was a recurring subject, from Fallen in Karlslund through the castle bridge and downstream to Skebäck. Streets like Hamngatan, Storgatan and the lock at Slussen; the silhouette of the castle; the spire of Trefaldighetskyrkan - these landmarks appear again and again in his canvases, often signed and dated with just a two-digit year notation such as -49, -67 or -74. He also carried out public decoration work, including a commission at the former Livregementets grenadjärer I 3 barracks in Örebro. His work is held by Örebro County Museum. In 2019, author Clas Thor published the book "Över Svartån, in bland träden i Örebro" as a tribute to the painter, following an exhibition at Wadköpingsrummet where around 50 of 80 paintings sold in the first two days.

At auction, Thomander's work circulates almost entirely through Örebro Stadsauktioner, which handles 25 of the 30 lots recorded on Auctionist, with smaller numbers appearing at Falun Auktionsbyrå, Göteborgs Auktionsverk and elsewhere. Paintings on canvas and panel both appear - still lifes, Örebro cityscapes and landscapes - with realized prices typically between 450 and 1,974 SEK. The top recorded result stands at 4,303 SEK for a sunflower still life on panel. These figures position him firmly as a regional artist with a loyal local following rather than a national market presence.
