Hans Kögl
2 actieve items
Hans Kögl worked at the intersection of decorative craft and interior design, building a body of work defined by handcrafted gilt metalwork drawn from natural forms. His signature vocabulary included wheat sheaves, wisteria, Florentine flowers, and palm fronds, translated into wall sconces, floor lamps, chandeliers, and side table bases finished in gold- and copper-plated metal.
Kögl produced pieces in both Germany and Italy across a span of roughly three decades, beginning in the late 1950s and continuing through the 1980s. The dual geography is visible in his output: German pieces tend toward structured, heavier forms, while his Italian work often shows more exuberant surface detail. Several pieces were produced for or in association with Maison Jansen, the Paris-based interior design firm that supplied some of the grandest private interiors of the twentieth century.
His most documented design is the 'Pioggia d'Oro' wall sconce, whose name translates as 'rain of gold'. The piece takes the form of cascading gilt leaves surrounding integrated light sources, and was produced in multiple scales during the 1970s. Also widely attributed to him is the 'Coco Chanel' side table, featuring a wheat-sheaf base in gilt metal supporting a glass top. These pieces fit squarely within the Hollywood Regency aesthetic that dominated high-end interior decoration in Europe and North America during this period.
Palm tree floor lamps associated with Kögl can stand well over a metre and a half tall, functioning as sculptural objects as much as light sources. The attention to naturalistic detail in these pieces separates them from mass-produced contemporaries. His work sits alongside that of designers such as Maison Charles and Chrystiane Charles in the market for this era of decorative lighting.
On the Nordic auction market, Kögl pieces appear primarily at Stockholms Auktionsverk in both its Düsseldorf/Neuss and Köln locations, reflecting strong collector interest in Germany. Rheinveld Auktionen and Björnssons Auktionskammare have also handled his work. Across 29 recorded lots on Auctionist, top results include a 'Pioggia d'Oro' wall sconce at approximately 10,700 SEK and a Hollywood Regency floor lamp at around 8,500 SEK. Tables, including the 'Coco Chanel' model, have reached nearly 7,000 SEK.
