Gudrun Wikdahl was born in Norway in 1904 and later settled in Sweden, where she spent the greater part of her career in Södermanland, the region south of Stockholm. The Wikdahl family became closely associated with Nyköping, and it was here that her reputation as a painter took root and grew over several decades.
Wikdahl trained in figure drawing and painting through ABF's art education program, studying under teachers Lars-Erik Falk and Peter Dewoon. This informal but serious schooling gave her a grounding in observational drawing that would underpin her work throughout her life, even as her mature style moved decisively toward speed and intuition over deliberate finish.
Her working method was characterised by directness. She painted quickly, seeking the essential character of a face or a figure rather than accumulated detail. Portraits and figure compositions formed the core of her output, but she also returned regularly to landscapes and still life - porcini mushrooms in late-summer light, fishing boats at a harbour, the open Swedish countryside. She worked primarily in oil on canvas, though drawings also appear among her documented works.
Wikdahl had an eye for the social and the everyday. Works like "Grupporträtt" (group portrait), "Målarna" (the painters), and "Par i månsken" (couple in moonlight) suggest a painter drawn to human scenes, often warm and quietly observed. A painting held in the Sörmlands Museum collection - depicting herself pregnant and swimming in the sea - points to a personal, even intimate dimension to her work. She also made doll installations with political themes in the late 1970s.
On the Auctionist platform, Wikdahl is represented entirely through Gomér & Andersson in Nyköping, which presented a dedicated retrospective of around 50 works in early 2026 under the title "The World of Gudrun Wikdahl." Her 46 auction lots are almost entirely oil paintings, with a single drawing. Prices have remained modest, with top results around 2,300 SEK for a signed group portrait. She died in 1992 at the age of 88.
