Gucci was founded in Florence in 1921 by Guccio Gucci, a leather craftsman whose formative years working in the luxury hotels of London and Paris had given him an intimate understanding of the tastes of the European aristocracy. Drawing on local Florentine craftsmanship and the visual language of equestrian culture, Gucci opened his first shop on Via della Vigna Nuova selling imported luggage and hand-made leather goods. The saddle, bridle, and stirrup motifs that defined those early products remained central to the house's visual identity for decades.

The postwar period produced some of the house's most enduring designs. In 1947, with leather in short supply across Europe, the atelier devised a handbag handle fashioned from heated and lacquered Japanese bamboo. The result was the Bamboo bag, a piece assembled over approximately thirteen hours and finished so that no two handles were identical. Its structural ingenuity and quiet elegance attracted a following among film stars and royalty, and the bag has remained in continuous production. The 1950s also saw the introduction of the Gucci loafer, a moccasin with a signature metal snaffle bit that became one of the most copied shoe silhouettes of the twentieth century.

Under the stewardship of founder Guccio's sons, particularly Aldo Gucci, the house expanded to New York, London, Paris, and Tokyo during the 1960s and 1970s. The double-G monogram, derived from the founder's initials, was applied to a coated canvas that gave the brand instant recognisability in an era of expanding international travel and aspiration. This period also saw the introduction of the green-red-green webbing stripe, another motif drawn from the equestrian world.

The house entered a period of turbulence through the 1980s and early 1990s as family disputes fractured leadership and diluted the brand through excessive licensing. A decisive transformation came in the mid-1990s when Tom Ford, working alongside chief executive Domenico De Sole, repositioned Gucci as a byword for sleek, body-conscious glamour. Alessandro Michele, appointed creative director in 2015, enacted an equally dramatic pivot toward maximalist, gender-fluid romanticism before departing in 2022. Gucci is today owned by the French luxury conglomerate Kering.

At auction, Gucci occupies a consistent position within the secondary market for vintage fashion and accessories. Early bamboo-handled bags, pre-1980s GG canvas pieces, and items with documented celebrity provenance tend to generate the strongest results. Nordic auction houses regularly present Gucci lots across categories including handbags, luggage, scarves, and jewellery, reflecting the broad Scandinavian appetite for investment-grade vintage fashion.
