Gerhard Wihlborg

Gerhard Wihlborg grew up on the family farm at Grimshög outside Löderup, on the flat peninsula of Österlen that juts into the Baltic. That corner of Skåne - its wide skies, stone walls, fishing harbors, and potato fields - would remain the center of his visual world for the rest of his life.

He started out learning the trade as a house painter in 1912, a practical apprenticeship that gave him a craftsman's respect for material and surface. From there he moved through Tekniska skolan in Malmö and Althin's painting school before entering the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, where he studied from 1917 to 1923. In 1921 he was awarded the Chancellor's Medal and traveled to Italy on a study scholarship - a formative journey that broadened his sense of light and pictorial space.

Back in Skåne, Wihlborg divided his life between summers at the farm in Grimshög and winters in Ystad, and the resulting body of work is rooted in that rhythm. He painted still lifes, portraits, and outdoor scenes with equal attention, but the landscapes and genre motifs - potato harvesters at work, market stalls in town, the coastal road in winter - carry a documentary weight. He has been described as someone who painted with "faceted eyes": each detail observed from the angle most true to itself rather than subordinated to a single compositional viewpoint. After around 1940 his handling became more diffuse and atmospheric, though the attachment to specific Österlen motifs never loosened.

Public commissions came alongside the easel work. His large tempera apse painting "Skolutflykt" for the auditorium of Ystad's gymnasium is among the most visible. He was awarded Ystad Municipality's Cultural Prize in 1965, recognition from the community he had spent decades painting. His work is held in permanent collections at Malmö Museum, Ystad Art Museum, Kristianstad Museum, Landskrona Museum, Trelleborg Museum, Skissernas Museum in Lund, Österlen Museum, and Tomelilla Art Hall.

On the Swedish auction market, Wihlborg's paintings appear steadily at houses concentrated in the south of the country - Skånes Auktionsverk, Bukowskis, Höganäs Auktionsverk, and Björnssons Auktionskammare among them. The 22 auction records on Auctionist are almost entirely paintings, reflecting the medium he worked in most consistently. Prices are in line with a regional artist whose museum presence is strong but whose market remains primarily local - a reliable find for collectors focused on Skånsk figurative painting from the first half of the twentieth century.
