Karl Edvard Diriks (1855–1930) was born in Christiania, now Oslo, into a prominent Norwegian family. His grandfather was government minister Christian Adolph Diriks, and he was a cousin of Edvard Munch. He initially trained as an architect at Karlsruhe from 1874 to 1875, then moved to the Bauakademie in Berlin, where he studied alongside Christian Krohg and befriended Hans Gude, Frits Thaulow, and Max Klinger. The architectural training left its mark on the structural clarity that characterises even his most atmospheric canvases.

On a first visit to Paris in 1882–83, Diriks encountered French Impressionism and it reoriented his practice entirely. He was drawn particularly to Renoir and Monet, and the handling of light on water became central to his work. He settled in Drøbak on the Oslofjord in 1892, the year he married Swedish-born sculptor Anna Diriks, and the fjord's shifting moods supplied him with motifs for the rest of his life. His harbour and coastal paintings from the Norwegian years show a direct, energetic brushwork combined with a keen eye for atmosphere.

From around 1899 to 1922, Diriks spent extended periods in Paris, integrating himself into the Montparnasse milieu. He was nicknamed "the Scandinavian giant" and "painter of winds" by French contemporaries who saw in his work a vigorous, elemental quality. In 1907 he was awarded the Légion d'honneur, an occasion marked by a banquet hosted by friends including Auguste Rodin, Antoine Bourdelle, and Paul Fort. He exhibited widely in France and was received as a serious figure within the international avant-garde of that period.

Diriks moved between Norwegian coastal subjects, Paris street and park scenes, and Île-de-France landscapes with equal facility. His late career returned to the Oslofjord, producing views of Drøbak, Pipervika, and the inner reaches of the fjord that rank among his most assured works.

At auction, Diriks is handled almost exclusively by Norwegian houses, with Grev Wedels Plass Auksjoner dominating his market. Top lots have reached 120,000 NOK for major compositions such as "Fra Drøbaksundet" (1923) and "Vinterdag i Paris", with harbour and fjord scenes from the 1910s and 1920s consistently attracting serious bidding. His French connection and the Légion d'honneur give him an international story that supports prices beyond the purely domestic Impressionist market.
