Charles Sjöholm

Charles Sjöholm was born in Stockholm in 1933, growing up in a household where art was a natural presence - his father was himself an artist, and the young Sjöholm began painting and drawing seriously during his teenage years in 1940s Stockholm. That formative decade, with its particular quality of northern light, waterways, and post-war urban rhythms, left a permanent mark on his visual imagination.

Sjöholm trained formally at Konstfack, the Stockholm school of arts, crafts and design, and also at Gerlesborgsskolan. These two institutions gave him a grounding in both fine arts technique and graphic disciplines, a combination that would define the breadth of his practice: he works simultaneously in oil painting, drawing, and printmaking, with colour lithography becoming a significant part of his output alongside canvas work.

His painting style carries what critics describe as a naivistic spirit - not untrained naivety, but a deliberate warmth and lightness of touch that sets his cityscapes apart from academic urban painting. Views across Skeppsholmen, the arc of Västerbron, ice-skaters on winter waters, cafe scenes, and figures cycling through cobbled streets recur throughout his work. He has also ventured beyond Stockholm, depicting the waterways of Uppsala and figure compositions that show a more intimate interest in human movement.

Sjöholm has exhibited in Sweden and internationally, including print work produced at Litografias Artisticas in Barcelona, where the collaboration expanded his printmaking repertoire. His lithographs appear in numbered editions, some reaching print runs of 280 to 360, making his graphic work among the more accessible entry points to his practice at auction.

At auction, Sjöholm's work circulates primarily through Swedish houses. Across 36 lots on Auctionist, his paintings appear most often at Metropol, Formstad Auktioner, and Stockholms Auktionsverk. Top recorded prices for oil paintings reach 3,600 SEK, with works including a winter skating scene and a view towards Skeppsholmen among the highest sellers. His lithographs and coloured prints form a consistent second tier of the market, offering signed and numbered works at lower price points.
