Cecilia Johansson

1 actieve items

Cecilia Johansson worked as a silversmith in Gothenburg across three decades, producing handcrafted sterling silver jewelry that sits comfortably within the broader current of Scandinavian Modernism. Her work - rings, necklaces, bracelets, brooches and pendants - is consistently characterised by clean geometric forms, carefully worked surfaces, and the integration of natural stones including rock crystal, smoky quartz, turquoise and agate.

Her career is closely intertwined with that of her husband, Karl-Ingemar Johansson (1927-1997), one of Gothenburg's most noted mid-century silversmiths. Together they co-founded and ran a silversmith workshop and retail shop in Gothenburg after 1969, working under the hallmark "Guld & Silversmederna Cecilia K I Johansson, Göteborg". The double billing on hallmarked pieces reflects the collaborative nature of their practice: Karl-Ingemar frequently designed while Cecilia executed the work, and the craftsmanship across their jointly-marked output is unusually consistent.

Before the independent workshop, both had been part of Silversmederna Högberg & Co on Aschebergsgatan in Gothenburg, a collective that shaped the post-war Gothenburg silversmithing scene. The aesthetic lineage from that milieu - restrained ornament, preference for sterling over more precious metals, and a material curiosity about semiprecious stones - runs through Cecilia Johansson's individual body of work throughout the 1960s, 1970s and into the 1980s.

Her earliest known hallmarked pieces date to 1961, and documented work continues at least through 1991. The durability of output across this period, always identified by Gothenburg city marks and date letters, makes her pieces straightforwardly attributable - an advantage for collectors of Swedish studio silver who rely on hallmarking to confirm provenance.

At auction, her work appears predominantly through Gothenburg-based houses and the major Stockholm rooms. The 25 items recorded on Auctionist span all the major jewelry categories - rings, necklaces and pendants, bracelets and brooches - with top results reaching 6,300 SEK for a sterling silver necklace and 5,150 SEK for a silver and rock crystal hand ornament. Göteborgs Auktionsverk, Kaplans Auktioner and Stockholms Auktionsverk Göteborg account for the bulk of appearances, reflecting the regional grounding of her collector base.
