Carl Albin Berndtsson was born on 19 September 1902 in Lyby, a village in Skåne, and spent much of his life in the coastal town of Glumslöv in the same region. He trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (Konstakademin) in Stockholm and supplemented that foundation with study trips to England, Belgium, France, and South Africa, absorbing influences from European plein-air and impressionist traditions before returning to paint the scenery closest to him.
His subjects are rooted in southern Swedish everyday life: the chalk-white fishing villages and harbour quays of the Skåne coast, winter landscapes with snow-covered farmhouses, and the workboats and weathered fishermen of the region's small harbours. He also painted flower still lifes and, occasionally, mountain scenery from Jämtland. The palette tends toward restrained, atmospheric tones that carry a sense of season and weather rather than decorative brightness. A clear affinity with the tradition of Hans Larsson and the broader Skåne regionalist school runs through his work.
Berndtsson exhibited with the Skåne Art Association (Skånska konstsällskapet) in 1935–1937 and participated in the State Art Council (Statens konstråd) exhibition in 1940. He also showed with the Swedish General Art Association (Sveriges allmänna konstförening) and the Northern Suburbs Painters. Individual exhibitions were held in Stockholm and in Köping.
His work is represented in the permanent collections of Kristianstad Museum, Helsingborg Museum, Landskrona Museum, and Höganäs Museum, confirming a lasting regional presence. He died in 1983.
At auction, Berndtsson's oils appear most regularly at Skåne-based houses. On Auctionist, 33 works have sold, led by houses including Skånes Auktionsverk, Garpenhus Auktioner, and Limhamns Auktionsbyrå. Top results have reached 3,100 SEK for an oil on canvas, with recurring subjects including harbour scenes, winter farmhouses, and the Glumslöv motifs he painted throughout his life.
