Gösta Bruno Karlsson was born on 9 August 1927 in Nyhammar, Grangärde, in the Dalarna region of central Sweden. He lived and worked for much of his adult life in Sundbyberg, outside Stockholm, and died there on 24 March 2020 at the age of 92. His long career - spanning over six decades of active production - bridged the landscape traditions of Dalarna and the urban environment of the Swedish capital.
Karlsson was largely self-taught in his early years, before studying at Konstfackskolan (the School of Arts, Crafts and Design) in Stockholm from 1947 to 1948. He later trained at Teckningslärarinstitutet (the Drawing Teacher Institute) from 1956 to 1960, qualifying as a drawing teacher. This dual role - practising artist and educator - shaped his relationship to art over subsequent decades, as he worked to pass on skills in observational drawing and painting to younger generations.
His paintings draw from three broad geographical sources: the landscapes of Grangärde and the wider Dalarna-Ludvika region where he grew up; the mountains of Kebnekaise and the Årosjokk area in Swedish Lapland; and the streets, waterways, and neighbourhoods of Stockholm. Works with titles such as "Yttersta tvärgränd, Söder", "Utsikt från skansen", and "Gamla Hagalund" show a painter attentive to the particular character of specific places, capturing the light and atmosphere of urban Stockholm with directness and affection.
Karlsson worked in oil, watercolour, lithography, and copper engraving, and also produced drawings. His public commissions include a dean's portrait for Stockholm University and a portrait for the Swedish Bar Association. He participated in exhibitions in Norway, Finland, Poland, Austria, France, England, and the United States, as well as at Hässelby Castle and Dalarnas Museum.
At auction, Karlsson's work circulates steadily through Swedish regional and specialist houses. Garpenhus Auktioner accounts for the largest share of his 48 catalogued lots on Auctionist, followed by Stockholms Auktionsverk, Crafoord Auktioner Stockholm, and Olsens Auktioner. His top recorded sale is 3,900 SEK for "Yttersta tvärgränd, Söder", an oil on canvas. His prints - including lithographs of Stockholm motifs such as Gamla Hagalund - also appear at auction and carry steady collector interest among those drawn to mid-century Swedish urban imagery.
