Bela Hradil

3 actieve items

Béla Adalbert Hradil was born on 3 March 1885 in Miskolc, in northeastern Hungary, into a cultured household - his father was a music director, and music ran through the family. After secondary school in Miskolc, Hradil left Hungary to study painting seriously: first in Budapest, then at Simon Hollósy's painting school in Munich, and later in Berlin under Lovis Corinth, one of the most demanding and technically rigorous painters of the late German naturalist tradition. He supplemented this training with a specialized course in the restoration of old paintings in both Paris and Milan - skills that would serve him throughout his life alongside his own artistic practice.

In 1923, Hradil emigrated to Sweden, settling initially in Malmö before relocating to Helsingborg, where he spent the rest of his life. He became a Swedish citizen in 1933. In Helsingborg he built a dual career: painting steadily and working as a conservator, applying the restoration techniques he had acquired in Paris and Milan to care for private and institutional collections. He also remained deeply musical - playing violin, cello, guitar, cittern, and ocarina - and maintained ties with the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra, participating in performances at the concert hall.

His subjects were grounded and domestic: flower still lifes, including lilacs and mixed arrangements; landscapes; horse studies; and portraits, ranging from formal sittings to more intimate character studies. A portrait of a Sami man, oil on panel, shows the range of subjects he was willing to approach. His approach to color was personal and consistent - warm, direct, and unafraid of richness without ornamentation. He exhibited with Helsingborg's art association and was known locally as a craftsman with genuine technical depth.

Hradil died in 1968 in Skälderviken, the small coastal community north of Helsingborg. On the secondary market in Sweden, his works trade in the modest range typical of regional painters of his generation. Within our platform, his 22 items are catalogued entirely as paintings, appearing at regional auction houses including Stockholms Auktionsverk Göteborg, Växjö Auktionskammare, and Halmstads Auktionskammare. Top recorded prices include 1,600 SEK for a Sami portrait in oil on panel and 1,100 SEK for a floral still life. His works remain accessible for collectors interested in mid-century Swedish regionalism with a Central European painterly sensibility.
