Audemars Piguet was founded in 1875 by Jules-Louis Audemars and Edward-Auguste Piguet in Le Brassus, a small village in the Vallée de Joux in the Swiss Jura Mountains. The two men had grown up in the valley, where generations of families had practiced watchmaking during the long winters when agricultural work was impossible, passing technical knowledge down through trades rather than institutions. When Audemars and Piguet formalized their partnership, they did so in a region that already had a deep tradition of producing complicated movements for the Swiss watch industry's larger finishing houses.

The company established itself quickly as a specialist in complications. More than half the watches, pendants, and pocket watches Audemars Piguet produced between 1882 and 1892 incorporated chiming mechanisms. In 1892 the firm built what it records as the first minute-repeating wristwatch, a technical feat that required miniaturising a complex striking system into a case worn on the wrist. In 1899 came a grand complication pocket watch combining a perpetual calendar, chronograph with split seconds, deadbeat seconds, and both grande and petite sonnerie striking. In 1925 the company produced the thinnest pocket watch caliber of its era. These achievements set the template for a manufacturing philosophy built on technical depth rather than volume.

Audemars Piguet has remained continuously in the ownership of the founding families, a distinction that separates it from the consolidated groups that control most of the Swiss industry. The original building in Le Brassus, constructed in 1868, preceded the company's founding; the first production atelier followed in 1907 and remains part of the headquarters today.

The brand's global profile changed decisively in 1972 with the launch of the Royal Oak, reference 5402, designed in a single night by Gérald Genta. Audemars Piguet's managing director had called Genta the afternoon before the Basel trade fair and asked for a sketch of a steel sports watch unlike anything the industry had produced. Genta based the design on the helmet of a deep-sea diver, with an octagonal bezel secured by eight hexagonal screws and the joint between bezel and case left visible rather than hidden. The resulting watch was released in stainless steel, a material then considered too common for luxury pieces, and priced at 3,650 Swiss francs, more than the equivalent gold watches of the period. The watch caused immediate controversy in the trade and sold slowly at first before becoming the commercial and cultural foundation of the modern brand. The guilloché Tapisserie dial and integrated bracelet are design signatures that have carried through five decades of variants.

The Royal Oak Offshore, launched in 1993, extended the family into larger, more sports-oriented territory, while the Millenary collection introduced an oval case form with visible movement architecture. In 2019 the company launched Code 11.59, its first new collection architecture in decades, with a round case containing multiple geometric layers visible through the dial.

Audemars Piguet operates the Musée Atelier Audemars Piguet in Le Brassus, opened in 2020 in a building designed by BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group), which houses historical timepieces and functions as a working atelier open to visitors.

On Auctionist, 34 Audemars Piguet items are indexed, handled predominantly by Kaplans Auktioner (10), Phillips (6), Finarte (6), and Bukowskis Stockholm (5). The Royal Oak dominates the lots in circulation, including the Quantième Perpetuel automatic, the Frosted Gold Lady, and the Nick Faldo limited edition. Prices in the database span from EUR 9,450 to CHF 107,950, with the highest result on a rare white gold wristwatch. The secondary market for Audemars Piguet at Nordic and international auction is concentrated at the high end, with steel Royal Oak variants and grand complications drawing the most competitive bidding.
