Arvid Frans Andersson (1934–2002) was a Swedish painter and draughtsman whose work centred almost exclusively on the wildlife and natural landscapes of western Sweden. Born on 5 February 1934 in Norra Sanne, Göteborgs och Bohus County, he grew up close to Hunneberg, the flat-topped plateau in Västra Götaland that became both the physical and thematic heart of his art. He died on 14 February 2002.
Andersson was largely self-taught, studying through the Hermods correspondence institute in Malmö rather than at an academy. This independent formation kept his practice close to observation and away from institutional modernism. He worked across oil on canvas, watercolour, gouache, and ink drawing, with watercolour becoming his most characteristic medium for wildlife subjects. His animal paintings are distinguished by a quiet naturalism: the fox in a winter field, the pheasant in stubble, the capercaillie displaying on a forest clearing, the roe deer at a roadside. He was not interested in drama or allegory, but in the specific quality of an animal's posture at a particular moment and season.
Hunneberg, a nature reserve and royal hunting ground, gave him an enduring subject. The plateau's mixed forest, wetlands, and open fields support populations of elk, deer, capercaillie, black grouse, and hare, all recurring in his paintings. Works such as "Orrspel på Hunneberg" (capercaillie display on Hunneberg) demonstrate how closely his art was tied to a specific place and its seasonal rhythms.
He exhibited widely across Sweden: separate exhibitions in Stockholm, Trollhättan, Kalmar, Växjö, Tingsryd, and Sävsjö, and participation in the Hunting Fair (Jaktmässan) in Jönköping and art and antiques fairs in Gothenburg, Borås, and Svenljunga. The hunting fair exhibitions were a natural forum for work of this kind, placing it in a community of viewers with direct experience of the fauna depicted. He also produced a series of postcards with animal motifs, extending his reach beyond the gallery context.
On the Auctionist platform, Andersson has 32 recorded lots, primarily at regional auction houses in western and southern Sweden: Kalmar Auktionsverk (9 lots), Växjö Auktionskammare (6 lots), Roslagens Auktionsverk (3 lots), and Auktionsmagasinet Vänersborg (3 lots). His top recorded sales include "Tofsvipor - motiv från Brätte" and "Orrspel", both in oil on canvas. Current prices at auction are modest, making his work accessible to collectors interested in Swedish wildlife painting and naturalist traditions.
