Arnold Eres was born in 1917 and worked as a painter and graphic artist until his death in 1986. His output spans roughly three decades of documented activity, with dated works appearing from the late 1950s through 1985. The breadth of his technical range is notable: oil on canvas, oil on panel, watercolor, gouache, pencil drawing, etching, and mixed media all appear across his surviving works, suggesting an artist who moved comfortably between different methods depending on subject and scale.
His landscapes form the core of what survives in the auction record. Titles such as "Landsväg i Skåneland" (1970), "Afton horisont på Onsalaviken" (1974), and "Pliktfång utanför Tvååker" (1975) place him firmly in the coastal and agricultural terrain of southwestern Sweden, between Halland and Skåne. Onsalaviken, the bay that appears in several works, lies on the Halland coast south of Kungsbacka - a landscape that Swedish painters have returned to for generations due to its expansive horizon lines and shifting light. The 1972 work "Landskap med röd sol" (Landscape with Red Sun) suggests an interest in heightened atmospheric color that goes beyond documentary realism.
Beyond landscape, Eres also produced figure drawings, nude studies, urban etchings with city motifs (dated 1959), still lifes of roses and flowers, and at least one work titled "Reseskildring" (Travel Account) in oil on canvas - indicating he was not a painter limited to his immediate surroundings. The etchings from 1959 show early engagement with printmaking and urban subject matter, pointing to a more formally trained background than his regional auction profile might suggest.
Eres signed his works both as "Arnold Eres" and occasionally simply as "Eres," the latter appearing on the Onsalaviken painting from 1974. His works have been handled primarily by auction houses in western Sweden, with Borås Auktionshall accounting for the largest share of his auction appearances. This concentration in the Borås and West Sweden region aligns with the Halland and Skåne motifs that recur in his titles.
In Auctionist's database, Eres is represented by 29 lots across houses including Borås Auktionshall, Göteborgs Auktionsverk, Stockholms Auktionsverk Göteborg, and Stockholms Auktionsverk Helsingborg. Six lots remain active. The highest recorded sale is "Reseskildring" at 8,009 SEK, followed by "Röd ros" at 1,300 SEK and a gouache from 1960 at 1,000 SEK. His works occupy the accessible end of the Swedish secondary market for mid-century regional painters, with most lots settling in the 300-1,000 SEK range and occasional stronger results for oils with distinctive subject matter.
