Aksel Kjersgaard (1925-2018) was a Danish master cabinetmaker who established his furniture factory in Odder, Denmark in 1952. Before founding the company, he spent more than three years working as a travelling craftsman - known in Danish as a naver - across Europe and Morocco, gaining hands-on experience in workshops before returning home to try his own ideas. Production began in earnest in 1955, with the factory turning out cabinets, dressers, consoles, sideboards, and the wall mirrors that would become the brand's most recognisable output.
Kjersgaard's approach to design was defined by restraint. His pieces used exotic hardwoods - primarily teak and rosewood - for their visual warmth and fine grain, while decorative ornament was kept to a minimum. Clean lines, careful joinery, and a rejection of unnecessary flourishes placed his work firmly within the Danish Modern movement, a current that prioritised functional beauty and honest craft over applied decoration.
The factory's reputation grew through a series of collaborations with independent designers. Through the 1950s and 1960s, Kai Kristiansen worked closely with Aksel Kjersgaard A/S, producing side tables, chests, and the wall-mounted Model 128 shelf - pieces that became signatures of the brand. From 1970 onwards, architects and former Rud Rasmussen cabinetmakers Søren Nissen and Ebbe Gehl brought a Shaker-influenced sensibility to the range, a partnership that laid the groundwork for what eventually became the Naver Collection, founded in 1995 through a collaboration between Gramrode Møbelfabrik and Aksel Kjersgaard A/S.
The company passed to the second generation in 1989 when Jørgen Kjersgaard, a trained carpenter, joined as master cabinetmaker, taking ownership in 1992. Under continued family stewardship the production workshop in Odder has maintained its focus on craft-based furniture, and pieces from the 1955-1975 period are now sought after internationally as examples of Danish mid-century cabinetmaking at its most considered.
On the Nordic auction market, Aksel Kjersgaard pieces appear regularly at Danish and Swedish houses. The 48 items tracked on Auctionist span mirrors, dressers, side tables, storage cabinets, and entry furniture, with the majority sold at Palsgaard Kunstauktioner and Bidstrup Auktioner.
