When Yves Henri Donat Mathieu-Saint-Laurent arrived in Paris from Oran, Algeria as a teenager in the early 1950s, he carried a portfolio of sketches that would impress Christian Dior enough to hire him on the spot. Born on 1 August 1936, the young Saint Laurent became Dior's assistant at seventeen and was named head of the House of Dior after the master's sudden death in 1957, making him at twenty-one the youngest couturier in Paris. His first collection for Dior, the Trapeze line, was a critical sensation. But the relationship soured when Saint Laurent was drafted into the French army in 1960 and subsequently fired.
In 1961, with his partner Pierre Berge providing financial and managerial support, Saint Laurent founded his own house. The decisions that followed would reshape fashion. In 1966, he debuted Le Smoking, a tuxedo suit for women that challenged the fundamental gender codes of formal dress. That same year, he launched Rive Gauche, one of the first luxury ready-to-wear lines, democratising haute couture sensibility for a broader audience. His collections through the 1960s and 1970s drew on sources as diverse as Pop Art, Ballets Russes, Mondrian, African art, and traditional Chinese clothing, establishing a cultural breadth that few designers have matched.
Saint Laurent's influence extended beyond garments into a larger conversation about identity, gender, and the role of fashion as cultural expression. He dressed Catherine Deneuve, created costumes for theatre and film, and elevated fashion photography into art through collaborations with Helmut Newton and others. He died on 1 June 2008 in Paris.
