Algot Wilhelm Kåge was born on 6 March 1889 in Stockholm. He trained as a decorative painter at Tekniska skolan in Stockholm before continuing his studies under Carl W. Wilhelmson in Gothenburg, Johan Rohde in Copenhagen, and at the Plakatschule in Munich.
In 1917, Kåge became artistic director of the Gustavsberg porcelain factory. His first significant project was the Liljeblå service, conceived to bring well-designed tableware within reach of working-class households. In 1930 he unveiled the Argenta series: stoneware glazed in deep green and embellished with applied silver decoration. In 1933 he designed Praktika, a functionalist, stackable tableware system. The third major strand was Farsta stoneware, entirely handmade pieces of uncommon depth and variation.
Kåge remained at Gustavsberg until 1949, succeeded by Stig Lindberg. He received the Prince Eugen Medal in 1949. He died on 25 November 1960. With 594 lots recorded on Auctionist, his work is regularly offered at Nordic auction houses.
