Ulf Lundkvist was born on 16 January 1952 in Norrköping and grew up partly in Trångsund, a suburb south of Stockholm. His formative years were shaped by a deep fascination with vintage Swedish popular culture, particularly the illustrated magazines and graphic ephemera of the 1940s and 1950s that he encountered as a child. This visual archive became the raw material for a career built equally around fine art painting and comics.
He trained at Grundskolan för konstnärlig utbildning (Grundis) and then at Konstfack in Stockholm, completing his formal education with a broad foundation in illustration, printmaking, and painting. In 1973 he made his professional debut with the illustrated book Valkommet, co-created with fellow Konstfack student Alf Tjallskog.
Lundkvist became a prominent contributor to the Swedish alternative press during the late 1970s, publishing work in outlets such as Galago, ETC, and Dagens Nyheter. His strip Assar, following a sentient hot dog escaping an absurd fate, became one of the most recognizable Swedish comic characters of its generation. He also created the recurring figure known as Mannen med nasan, a deadpan observer of provincial life. These comics earned him the Adamsonstatyetten from the Swedish Comics Academy in 1983, the medium's highest recognition in Sweden.
In parallel with his comics practice, Lundkvist maintained an active painting career working primarily in oil and mixed media. His canvases return repeatedly to the same thematic territory as his strips: small-town Sweden, empty roads, railway platforms, swimming spots, and domestic interiors that feel suspended just before some unnamed transition. The palette is deliberate and muted, recalling the cool northern light of Swedish summers and winters alike. Works range from single-figure compositions to street scenes and landscapes observed with the same blend of affection and gentle irony that characterizes his graphic work.
Lundkvist's paintings have appeared at major Swedish auction houses including Bukowskis Stockholm and Stockholms Auktionsverk.
