Ulf Jöran Hårdner was born in 1942 in Hässleholm, a town in the Skåne region of southern Sweden. He came to painting without formal training, developing his practice independently and finding his subjects close to home - the flat coastal landscapes and waterways of Skåne, the island of Hven in the Øresund strait, and the working harbours and sailing vessels that populate that stretch of water.

Oil on canvas is his primary medium, and his technique has the directness of someone who learned to paint by looking rather than by formal instruction. His palette tends toward muted blues, greys, and ochres - the actual colours of the southern Swedish coast in varying light and weather. Titles recorded in auction catalogues point to a consistent focus: 'Motiv från Ven', 'Kustparti med båt och hus', 'Kustvy', 'Båten vid Viken'. Windmills appear in the background of some landscapes, placing the scenes geographically within the flat terrain east of Malmö and Helsingborg. In several works, the composition is stripped back to a simple horizon, a hull, and an expanse of water.

Hven (also known as Ven), the small Swedish island located roughly halfway between Helsingborg and Helsingor, is a recurring subject. The island has attracted artists since the nineteenth century, partly for its particular quality of light and partly because its exposed position gives unobstructed views across the Øresund to the Danish coast. Hårdner returns to it repeatedly, painting the shoreline, the boats moored in its small harbour, and the open water surrounding it.

His work has appeared at auction houses concentrated in the southern Swedish region: Crafoord Auktioner in Malmö, Höganäs Auktionsverk, Halmstads Auktionskammare, Skånes Auktionsverk, and Helsingborgs Auktionskammare. He has also produced lithographs, with signed and numbered editions documented at auction. Alongside his oils, a colour lithograph depicting a boat subject is among the works recorded in Swedish sale archives. His auction prices remain modest, typically in the range of 300 to 1800 SEK, which places him among the working regional painters of his generation who built a consistent output without seeking a wider commercial profile.
