Ulf Eriksson

Ulf Eriksson was born on November 4, 1942 in Helsingborg, in the far south of Sweden. The city's position on the sound between Sweden and Denmark - facing Helsingor across a strip of open water - shaped a cultural environment that was outward-looking, and Eriksson's career would reflect that orientation throughout.

He trained initially in building construction at the Technical School in Helsingborg, completing that program in 1969, but his commitment to art had already solidified years earlier. He had been running Studio Ulf Eriksson in Teckomatorp, a small locality in northwest Skane, since 1961 - long before any formal institutional debut. Early recognition came in the form of the Elsa Killberg award from Helsingborg, received between 1965 and 1967.

His public debut came in 1968 at Galleri HS in Lund. The exhibition generated contacts that led directly to exhibitions in Poland and participation in programming on Krakow television - an international reach that was unusual for a first show. Over the following years he made extended study trips through Europe, spending time in Paris and London, and in 1973 received a grant from Statens Konstrad, the Swedish state body supporting professional artists. A further grant came in 1975 from Rheinland-Pfalz in Bad Munster am Stein, Germany.

His practice spans painting, printmaking, and textile art. His graphic work - etchings, lithographs, and later pigment prints - earned him representation in some of the most significant print collections in the world. His work entered the permanent collections of Moderna museet in Stockholm, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (where a piece titled "Memories from a Beach" was gifted by the artist in 1980), the Bibliotheque nationale in Paris, the Library of Congress in Washington, Malmo Museum, and the National Museum in Warsaw, among others. He also participated in Art Expo in New York during his four years living in that city from 1982 to 1986.

The subject matter running through his figurative work includes street musicians, couples, and scenes of ordinary evening life - titles such as "Gatumusikanten" (The Street Musician) and "Det hande en kvall" (It Happened One Evening) are characteristic. His paintings tend toward intimate narrative, using figure and setting to suggest a moment caught between the ordinary and the personal.

At auction, Eriksson's market is concentrated in southern Swedish houses - Auktionshuset Kolonn, Helsingborgs Auktionskammare, Skanes Auktionsverk, and Garpenhus Auktioner appear most frequently in the 41 items indexed on Auctionist. Prices remain modest, with the highest recorded sale at 1,300 SEK for an oil on canvas. His work circulates most consistently as affordable original art within the Swedish regional market, with paintings and prints both actively present.
