Born on February 10, 1920 in Nordmalings parish, Västerbotten County, Torgny Forsberg spent his life rooted in the far north of Sweden. He was the son of Olof Bernhard Forsberg and Klara Matilda Nygren, and from 1945 was married to Birgit Olofson. He died on October 8, 1992 in Umeå, the city that served as the cultural centre of his adult life.

Forsberg came of age as an artist during a period when Swedish provincial painters were beginning to find their own visual language distinct from the dominant Stockholm art world. His participation in the group exhibition 'Unga Västerbottenkonstnärer' (Young Artists from Västerbotten) in Umeå in 1951 placed him within a generation of northern Swedish painters who looked to their immediate environment for subject matter rather than to international trends. The exhibition was an early signal of a career that would remain firmly anchored to the landscapes and light of Norrland.

His paintings draw heavily on the terrain and seasonal character of northern Sweden. Mountain scenery - fjällandskap and fjällmotiv - recurs throughout his output, rendered in oil on panel with a palette that captures the particular quality of subarctic light. He also painted coastal formations, Sami subjects including reindeer herding scenes, and abstract compositions that suggest a willingness to experiment beyond pure representation. A painting in the collections of Västerbottens Museum documents his attention to Sami culture, depicting a reindeer migration with two figures dressed in traditional kolt. He worked in both oil and acrylic on panel across several decades, dating works as late as 1986.

The body of work that has circulated at auction reflects a painter who was consistent in his focus and modest in scale - paintings that suited the domestic interiors of northern Sweden rather than the grand exhibition halls of the capital. His work has been offered at Metropol Auktioner, Bukowskis, Stockholms Auktionsverk, and regional houses including Norrlands Auktionsverk.

On the Nordic auction market, Forsberg's paintings appear regularly at northern Swedish regional houses, with Norrlands Auktionsverk accounting for the majority of his recorded appearances. His works typically sell at accessible price points, with oil on panel paintings achieving results in the range of 300 to 850 SEK in recent domestic auction records. His 12 catalogued items in the Auctionist database are all classified as paintings, confirming that his market presence remains tied to the regional auction circuit where his landscapes find their most natural audience.
