Tom Ford was born on August 27, 1961, in Austin, Texas, and raised partly in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He studied architecture at the Paris campus of Parsons School of Design before redirecting toward fashion, graduating in 1986 with a degree in interior architecture. Early experience at Perry Ellis and Cathy Hardwick in New York gave him a foundation in commercial American sportswear before a move to Europe changed the trajectory of his career entirely.

In 1990, Ford was hired by Dawn Mello at Gucci, then a company in serious financial difficulty. When Investcorp acquired the house and appointed him creative director in 1994, Ford embarked on one of the most complete brand reinventions in fashion history. He replaced the heritage house's stagnating image with something deliberately charged — velvet hipster trousers, barely-there slip dresses, a visual language saturated with desire and control. Annual revenues rose from $230 million to $3 billion over the following decade. Gucci's acquisition of Yves Saint Laurent followed, adding another storied house to Ford's creative dominion.

He left both Gucci and YSL in 2004 and launched his own label the following year. The Tom Ford brand moved swiftly into menswear, womenswear, beauty, and eyewear, establishing itself as a reference point for American luxury that looked outward rather than inward. The beauty division was sold to Estée Lauder in 2022 for $2.8 billion, and Ford stepped back as creative director in 2023, closing the chapter on two decades of brand-building.

Parallel to fashion, Ford developed a serious filmmaking practice. His debut feature, A Single Man (2009), adapted from Christopher Isherwood's novel, earned Colin Firth a Venice Film Festival Volpi Cup and a BAFTA Award, alongside an Academy Award nomination. His second film, Nocturnal Animals (2016), won the Grand Jury Prize at Venice and brought Golden Globe nominations for Best Director and Best Screenplay.

Ford served as chairman of the Council of Fashion Designers of America from 2019 to 2022 and has received seven CFDA Awards, including the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014 and Menswear Designer of the Year in both 2008 and 2015. In the Nordic secondary market, Tom Ford items appear regularly at Danish and Swedish auction houses including Bruun Rasmussen and Helsingborgs Auktionskammare. The lots are predominantly fashion accessories — eyewear models such as the Dominic and Natasha frames, leather goods including red skin wallets, and ready-to-wear pieces including dresses and stilettos. Realized prices are modest by primary market standards, reflecting the nature of the secondary fashion market in the region.
