Terry Laakso was born in Turku in 1965 into a family with strong craft roots in the Nauvoo archipelago - his father a musician, his mother a craftswoman. He encountered art formally as a child when he joined a children's art club run by sculptor Simo Helenius, and began working in oil somewhere in his early teens. By 1985 he was mounting his first solo exhibition, held in an empty townhouse on Koulukatu in Turku. That show marked the beginning of a professional practice that would develop across several countries and through a range of distinct stylistic phases.
In 1989, Laakso appeared in his first television documentary and signed a contract with an art dealer who purchased his entire production for four years. The arrangement gave him economic stability but also drove a high output. A significant public recognition came in 1993, when his painting 'Sunflowers' was acquired for the Finnish state art collections and installed at Mäntyniemi, the official residence of the President of Finland. In 1995, Laakso moved to Spain, where he would live and work across 11 different cities over the following 28 years, spending extended periods in the country while also working in Mexico. The exposure to Spanish culture, light, and colour - including a collaboration with flamenco dancer and producer David Morales - left a clear mark on his work.
At the turn of the century, Laakso developed what became his 'naive' period, producing figurative paintings with simplified, expressive forms that were exhibited widely across Finland. In 2013 the naive direction deepened, and by 2018 he was combining abstract, realistic, and surreal modes within individual works. That same year he introduced a new technique he calls 'Sea-mixed-sand painting', in which genuine Atlantic ocean sand - screened and treated using materials from both Lapland and Spain - is incorporated directly into oil paint and applied to boards. The method is technically demanding and takes roughly ten times longer per work than a conventional oil painting. Laakso is a member of the Finnish Artists' Association, the Tampere Art Society, and Kuvasto ry, and is registered with Artcertificate France/Spain.
At auction, Laakso's paintings have appeared consistently at Bukowskis Stockholm and Bukowskis Helsinki, where all 12 recorded sales in the Auctionist database originate. Works span a range of titles mixing Finnish and Swedish text - 'I gungan', 'Pa linan', 'Stenvarjo', 'Ootko sa kuplassa' - pointing to the bilingual register of his work and the Finnish-Swedish collector base that has engaged most actively with it. No hammer prices for these lots are recorded in the current database, suggesting either buy-in or results below reporting thresholds, though the consistent presence at a major Nordic house confirms ongoing market interest.
