Sven Jonson was born on September 28, 1902, in Sondrum, outside Halmstad. He grew up in a family of sailors, but art pulled him in a different direction. By 1922 he had committed to becoming a professional artist, and the following year he formed the group De Unga with Esaias Thoren. From 1925 to 1926, Jonson studied at Carl Wilhelmson's painting school in Stockholm, then traveled to Paris in 1926 to study under Otte Skold.

In August 1929, six young Halmstad artists founded the Halmstad Group. Jonson, along with Waldemar Lorentzon, Stellan Morner, Axel Olson, Erik Olson, and Esaias Thoren, had studied modern painting in Berlin and Paris. At the start of the 1930s, they encountered surrealism during visits to Paris and participated in international surrealist exhibitions alongside Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, and Wilhelm Freddie, becoming the first artists to bring surrealism to Sweden.

Jonson's surrealism took a form all his own. His paintings are characterized by desolate landscapes in bright yellow or brown tones, often populated by small human figures. "Det Doda Skeppet" (The Dead Ship) stands among his most striking works. During the 1940s and 1950s, he expanded into public art. In the early 1960s, he painted labyrinthine cathedrals. His final decade saw a shift to a predominantly blue color palette with cosmic motifs. He died on March 17, 1981.
