Stig Henrik Olson (1936-2016) was born on 3 September 1936 in Kristinehamn, Värmland, a region whose landscapes and cultural milieu shaped his artistic identity throughout his life. He trained at Anders Beckmans School of Design in Stockholm from 1953 to 1958 before continuing at the Royal Institute of Art (Kungliga Konsthögskolan), where he developed his distinctive graphic sensibility. His formation in both commercial design and fine art gave him a technical breadth that would define his output across several decades.
Olson's practice centred on portraiture, figurative subjects and landscape, rendered primarily through graphics, drawing and a signature large-format collage technique that combined mixed media on canvas or board. His works carry a Värmland regionalist quality, with recurring attention to the light and topography of the Närkeslätten plain and the industrial character of his home region, but always filtered through a graphic economy that owed as much to his design training as to painterly tradition.
Public commissions mark some of his most visible contributions. He created decorative works for the Music University in Örebro, the ink wash drawing "Cellisten" for the Örebro Concert House, "Eldvaktaren" for the Örebro City Library, and the mural "Vintergatan" in Kristinehamn. These commissions placed his art in civic spaces across central Sweden and reflect the sustained institutional confidence in his work.
His museum presence is substantial. Works are held at Nationalmuseum, Moderna museet, the Gothenburg Museum of Art, Malmö Museum, Värmland Museum, and a number of municipal collections including Örebro, Karlstad, Kristinehamn, Norrköping, Linköping and Västerås. A self-portrait was acquired by the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, placing him in the gallery's distinguished collection of artists' self-portraits. He was a founding member of the artist group D4, established in 1995 with Göran Danielson, Richard Brixel and Peter Ekström.
Among the awards Olson received are the Nationalmuseum Young Draftsmen Grant, Statens arbetsstipendium, the Thor Fagerqvist Grant, grants from Värmlands konstförening and Örebro municipality, NA:s kulturpris (1996), and the Frödingmedaljen (1998). The Frödingmedaljen - named after Värmland's most beloved poet Gustaf Fröding - carries particular regional significance.
On the Nordic auction market, Olson's works appear most frequently at regional houses, with Karlstad Hammarö Auktionsverk accounting for the largest share of the 48 recorded lots. Bukowskis Stockholm has also handled his work. Top auction results sit in the range of 1,400-4,600 SEK, with a mixed-media work titled "Gullin" achieving the highest recorded price at 4,600 SEK. The market reflects steady regional collector interest rather than speculative demand, consistent with a career built on public commissions and institutional recognition rather than the commercial gallery circuit.
