Sam Larsson (1910-1998) worked as a furniture designer in Sweden during the mid to late twentieth century, producing a concentrated body of work for the manufacturer DUX International. His output sits squarely within the Scandinavian modern tradition: functional forms resolved through clean geometry, with materials chosen for durability and tactile quality.

The chair that bears his name, the Sam, was introduced in 1974 and became one of his most commercially successful pieces. Built on a continuous tubular steel frame that flows from backrest to floor without interruption, the Sam was produced in leather and found wide use in both office and domestic settings. Its proportions were spare enough to read as a dining chair but substantial enough for extended use at a desk, which gave it unusual versatility. DUX selected it for reissue in 2015 as part of a design revival program, a sign of how well its construction and silhouette had aged.

Beyond the Sam, Larsson designed a line of lounge and reclining chairs for DUX across the 1960s and 1970s. The Fenix is among the most recognised of these, a bentwood reclining lounge chair with a removable headrest, offered in leather on a canvas-covered metal frame. The Metro and the Mona Roto swivel chair round out his known work for the manufacturer, each sharing the same preference for clean structure over ornament.

DUX, founded by Efraim Ljung in 1926 and initially focused on bedding, built its furniture reputation through partnerships with designers who shared a functionalist sensibility. Larsson fit naturally into that roster alongside contemporaries who were shaping Swedish furniture design for export markets in the postwar decades.

At auction, Sam Larsson pieces appear regularly at Swedish houses including Crafoord Malmö, SAV Helsingborg, and Göteborgs Auktionsverk. The Fenix lounge chair has sold for around 14,000 SEK, sets of Sam armchairs have reached 12,000 SEK for four pieces, and pairs of Sam chairs have crossed 9,900 EUR on the international market. The Sam chair in particular holds consistent demand, supported by the 2015 reissue that kept the design in wider circulation.
