Salvatore Ferragamo was born on 5 June 1898 in Bonito, a small village in the Campania region of southern Italy, the eleventh of fourteen children. He learned shoemaking as a child and emigrated to the United States in 1914, eventually making his way to Santa Barbara, California, to join several of his brothers. Recognizing that his shoes often caused discomfort, he enrolled at the University of Southern California to study anatomy - applying those principles directly to his lasts and constructions. By 1923 he had opened the Hollywood Boot Shop on Hollywood Boulevard, and within a few years his clientele included Rudolph Valentino, Gloria Swanson, Joan Crawford, and Clara Bow. The film studios relied on him to produce footwear for costume productions, and the press took to calling him the "shoemaker to the stars."

In 1927 Ferragamo returned to Italy and established his workshop in the Palazzo Spini Feroni in central Florence, a building the company still occupies today. He combined the efficiency of American production methods with the deep craft traditions of Florentine ateliers, training apprentices who would go on to shape the Italian leather goods industry. The 1930s brought material shortages due to wartime trade sanctions, and Ferragamo responded with inventive substitutions: cork for the wedge heel, raffia and cellophane for uppers, nylon fishing line for straps. The cork wedge, introduced in 1937, became one of the defining silhouettes of mid-century fashion.

Ferragamo died on 7 August 1960 in Fiesole, leaving behind a company with a global client list and a workshop structure built for scale. His wife Wanda and their children continued the business, expanding into ready-to-wear, silk scarves, handbags, and accessories over the following decades. The Ferragamo Museum, housed in the Palazzo Spini Feroni, opened in 1995 and holds over 10,000 models of footwear documenting the founder's output. The company, traded on the Milan Stock Exchange since 2011, now operates more than 600 stores across 96 countries.

At Nordic auctions, Ferragamo pieces appear primarily as fashion and accessory lots - silk scarves, leather bags, and the occasional chronograph wristwatch. On Auctionist, 21 items have been catalogued across houses including Stockholms Auktionsverk Helsingborg, Auktionshuset Kolonn, and Kaplans Auktioner. The strongest recent result was a brown leather bag with gold hardware that sold for 3,400 DKK. Most lots are modestly priced scarves and small leather goods in the 350-750 SEK range, making Ferragamo an accessible entry point for buyers interested in Italian luxury fashion at Swedish auction.
