Rolf Ingvar Karlsson

Karlsson's subject matter is tightly focused on his immediate geographic world. His canvases return repeatedly to Runnö and Kråkelund along the Baltic coast, to the limestone alvar of Öland with its stone walls and village farmsteads, to the rivers and woodland edges of Alsterån and the Småland plain. Within this circumscribed territory he works with considerable consistency, tracking seasonal light, the textures of old stone and weathered timber, and the stillness of unpopulated rural scenes. Works signed from the late 1980s through the 2000s and 2010s show a steady hand and a stable palette of muted greens, warm ochres, and quiet grey-blues.

Occasionally his travels carried him further afield. A painting of the Les Baux valley in Provence shows he applied the same close, descriptive attention to southern European light and architecture, but the Swedish coastal and agricultural landscape remains the clear center of his output.
