Rolf Dalin was born in 1934 in Malmö, and his path to painting was anything but conventional. He spent roughly 25 years working in the graphic industry before picking up a brush seriously, and the experience left a permanent mark - his trained sensitivity to composition and color surfaces repeatedly in his finished canvases. He is entirely self-taught as a painter, a fact he treats not as a gap but as a deliberate source of freedom, allowing him to develop his personal expression without the constraints of academic training.

Dalin sold his first paintings in 1983, and by 1985 he had left his industry career to paint full-time. His output quickly became anchored around three recurring subjects: the landscapes of Österlen in southeastern Skane, the streets and backyards of Malmö, and the fishing villages and harbors along the Scanian coast. The Österlen work is what most collectors associate with his name - paintings suffused with the particular clear, almost luminous quality of light over the flat agricultural plains and coastline of that peninsula. These have earned the collective nickname "ljusbilder" (light pictures) or "blå målningar" (blue paintings).

His technique relies heavily on hands, cloth and palette knife rather than conventional brushwork alone. This approach produces surfaces with a physical quality - layered and textured rather than smoothly blended - which reinforces the atmospheric character of the light he pursues. His Malmö urban scenes work as a deliberate counterpoint to the open Österlen paintings: building gables, empty lots left by demolition (the so-called "bomb holes" in Swedish urban slang), and the compressed geometry of city blocks replace the wide Scanian sky.

Dalin has exhibited close to 100 times around Skane and beyond since the mid-1980s, including venues in Stockholm. His work is held in the collection of Malmö Museum. In the Swedish art market his output sits in a range accessible to most buyers, reflecting his regional rather than national-gallery profile.

On Auctionist, Dalin appears primarily under Paintings, with the highest recorded sale being a composition in oil on canvas that reached 2,825 SEK at Helsingborgs Auktionskammare. His work has circulated through regional houses including Helsingborgs Auktionskammare, Markus Auktioner, Stockholms Auktionsverk Sickla, Kalmar Auktionsverk, and Gomér and Andersson Linköping. The price range is consistent with a painter whose audience is rooted in southern Sweden, where his landscape subjects carry local meaning.
