Stig Olof Agne Gustafsson - known as Olle - was born on 8 September 1934 in Almunge, Uppland. His path as an artist took shape gradually through a restless engagement with materials that few painters would think to combine: old books, tarpaulin, metallic foil, sand, and oil paint. The result is a body of work that moves between figuration and abstraction, grounded in the landscape and light of northern Sweden.
In 1965, Gustafsson relocated to Höga kusten - the High Coast of Ångermanland - settling in the small community of Klockestrand beside the Ångerman River. The dramatic terrain of that region, its cliffs, waters, and shifting skies, runs through his paintings and mixed-media panels as both subject and atmosphere. Works titled "Havsutsikt med sjöbodar" and "Klockestrand" situate him firmly in this geography, while his abstract compositions push beyond literal landscape toward something more interior.
In 1993, Gustafsson and his family established Kulturhuset Älvgården in Klockestrand, a cultural venue that hosted exhibitions and events for artists and the local community until 2008. Through the Kramfors Konstförening he also exhibited at Kramfors Konsthall, broadening his reach within Norrland's art network. His work is represented in the collections of Statens Konstråd, the Swedish State Art Council, and he has received a stipend from the Deverthska kulturstiftelsen.
Gustafsson's technique evolved over more than three decades into an increasingly material practice. His mixed-media panels layer textures and surfaces in ways that echo both collage traditions and the rougher aesthetics of art informel. Portrait subjects, still lifes, and figurative motifs appear alongside purely abstract works, suggesting a painter who never settled into a single mode but kept testing what a picture surface could hold.
At auction, Gustafsson's works appear primarily through Norrlands Auktionsverk and Stadsauktion Sundsvall - the two major houses serving the northern Swedish market - as well as through Stockholms Auktionsverk and Gomér & Andersson in Linköping. His auction record stands at 6,100 SEK for the oil on canvas "Vagnen", with abstract compositions also reaching above 5,000 SEK. A total of 29 works have passed through Swedish auction rooms, reflecting consistent collector interest in this distinctly Norrlandic voice.
