Nybro Glasbruk represents a particular strand of Swedish glass heritage: the preservation of traditional hand-moulding techniques in an era of increasing mechanisation. Founded in 1935 in the municipality of Nybro, which sits at the heart of Glasriket (the Kingdom of Crystal) in Smaland, the glassworks distinguished itself by committing exclusively to old-fashioned moulding methods, where the entire process takes place by hand rather than through the pressing techniques that other factories increasingly automated.
During the 1930s through 1950s, Nybro produced primarily functional items: dinner plates, small plates, drinking glasses, and bowls. An unusual speciality was the manufacture of shoe polish jars in large volumes, a reminder that Sweden's glass industry served industrial as well as domestic markets. The municipality of Nybro itself is sometimes called the capital of Glasriket, reflecting its central position in the region's glass heritage. The glass school established there developed an international reputation.
The Nybro brand also encompasses decorative items and mirrors that appear frequently in Swedish interiors. Paul Islingen was among the designers who contributed to the company's output in the 1980s.
At auction, Nybro items appear across Swedish houses including Helsingborgs Auktionskammare, Crafoord Auktioner, Stockholms Auktionsverk, and Auktionskammaren Sydost Kalmar. The 159 items on Auctionist include mirrors, glass, lighting, and furniture, with modest price points reflecting the brand's position as accessible Swedish craft.
