Niels Erik From was born in Denmark in 1908 and opened his first silversmithing workshop in 1931 at age 23. He registered his business formally in Nakskov, a market town on the island of Lolland in southern Denmark, in 1944, and it was there that the N.E. From name would become associated with Danish silver jewelry for the next four decades.

From's earliest work drew directly from the Skønvirke tradition, a Scandinavian variant of Art Nouveau and the Arts and Crafts movement that emphasized organic forms, natural motifs, and handcraft quality. His pieces from this period feature wiry, delicate foliage, flowers, fish, and other nature-derived imagery, often set with amber and semi-precious stones. The handling of line was fine and precise, with a sense of movement in each piece that reflected the broader Skønvirke principle of unity between form and material.

From the 1950s onward, the workshop's output shifted considerably. Where the early pieces had been personal designs executed by From himself, the later work increasingly came from other designers working within his studio. The aesthetic moved away from organic romanticism toward the cleaner, more geometric language of Scandinavian Modernism. Sterling silver flowers became elemental rather than botanical, petals simplified into curved planes and spherical forms. The studio continued producing some of the older Skønvirke-inflected pieces alongside the new modernist range, catering to collectors who valued both directions.

From's son-in-law Hilmer Jensen joined the business in 1960 and took over day-to-day management. Following From's death in 1982, Jensen continued running the workshop, but the company closed in 1990. Pieces are marked with the maker's hallmark N.E. From and, from the 1950s onward, often carry the stamp STERLING DENMARK N.E. FROM 925 S.

From's work sits within the broader Danish silver tradition that includes names like Georg Jensen, though the Nakskov workshop operated at a more accessible price point, which has contributed to the wide availability of his pieces in the secondary market today. At auction on Auctionist, From's silver appears across 17 lots at houses including Kaplans Auktioner and Skånes Auktionsverk. Necklaces and pendants form the largest share of the catalog, with prices ranging from around 2,400 to nearly 5,000 SEK for the strongest lots, including sterling silver colliers and pieces combined with freshwater pearls.
