Nanna Ditzel was born in Copenhagen on October 6, 1923, and trained first as a cabinetmaker before studying furniture architecture at the Danish Design School and the Danish School of Architecture under Kaare Klint. She graduated in 1946 and that same year married architect Jørgen Ditzel, with whom she ran a shared studio until his death in 1961.

The partnership produced some of the most recognizable objects in Scandinavian design history. In 1954, the couple designed a high chair that was later inducted into the Danish Culture Canon. From the early 1950s they designed silver jewelry for Georg Jensen, with Nanna becoming the first woman to design for the house. Their pieces drew on asymmetry and organic curvature to make silver complement rather than sit apart from the human body. At the Milan Triennale they collected silver medals in 1951, 1954, and 1957, followed by a gold medal in 1960. In 1956 they received the Lunning Prize.

After Jørgen died, Ditzel continued alone, designing the Toadstool stacking stool and table for children and extending her practice into textiles. The wicker Hanging Chair she produced in 1959 became one of the most photographed objects of the 1960s. In 1968 she moved to London with her second husband Kurt Heide and established Nanna Ditzel Productions Ltd. There she designed the Hallingdal upholstery fabric for Kvadrat, which became the world's best-selling furniture textile. After Heide's death in 1986 she returned to Copenhagen and continued designing. The Trinidad chair, launched with Fredericia in 1993, introduced her work to a new generation and remains in continuous production.

At auction, Ditzel's furniture commands consistent demand across Scandinavia and internationally. Early Søren Willadsen pieces, Georg Jensen jewelry, and desk designs regularly achieve strong results at Danish and Swedish houses. The breadth of her output, from cabinetry to silver to fabric, means collectors approach her work from multiple collecting categories, supporting stable prices across market conditions.
