Montblanc traces its origins to Hamburg in 1906, when banker Alfred Nehemias and engineer August Eberstein began producing pens under the name Simplo Filler Pen Co. The company's first notable model, the Rouge et Noir, appeared in 1909, followed a year later by the pen that would give the brand its permanent name. That name, Montblanc, was borrowed from the highest peak in the Alps, and the white six-pointed star representing the mountain's snowcap from above became the brand's trademark in 1913.
The turning point came in 1924 with the introduction of the Meisterstuck, a German word meaning masterpiece. The pen's black precious resin barrel, gold nib crafted through a 35-step process, and platinum accents established a template that has endured for a century. Each nib undergoes rigorous testing before leaving the manufactory, and the Meisterstuck 149, the largest of the line, has become one of the most recognized writing instruments in the world.
For decades, writing instruments defined the brand, but Montblanc began expanding its product range significantly in the latter half of the twentieth century. Alfred Dunhill acquired the company in 1977 and shifted its positioning sharply upmarket, discontinuing lower-priced lines. In 1993, Montblanc became part of the Swiss Richemont group, alongside Cartier, IWC, and Vacheron Constantin, which gave it access to serious watchmaking infrastructure. Montblanc Montre S.A. was established in Le Locle in 1997, and by 2007 the brand had become a full manufacture capable of producing movements in-house. The Heritage Chronometrie line, drawing on classical watchmaking references, became one of its more collectible series.
Beyond pens and watches, Montblanc has steadily built a leather goods and accessories business. Bags, small leather goods, and travel accessories now form a substantial part of the portfolio. Limited edition pens tied to literary figures and cultural icons, the Writers Edition series among them, have kept collector interest active alongside the core product lines.
On the Nordic auction market, Montblanc appears across 93 lots on Auctionist, with items ranging from fountain pens and wristwatches to bags and accessories. Goteborgs Auktionsverk, Stadsauktion Sundsvall, and Helsingborgs Auktionskammare account for the highest volume of offerings. Watches lead in terms of top prices, with a Heritage Chronometrie reaching 18,000 SEK, while quality fountain pens and leather goods typically sell in the 7,000-10,000 SEK range.
