Mats Norryd's first solo exhibition, held at Galleri Färg och Form in Stockholm in 1972, was built entirely around J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. The paintings were not illustrations in the conventional sense but imaginative interpretations - dramatic, color-saturated scenes of a world between myth and landscape. It was an unusually confident debut for an artist who had, until a few years earlier, been training as an actor.

Born in Halmstad in 1944, Norryd came to visual art through performance. After stepping away from acting, he pursued painting with the same intensity he had brought to the stage, drawing on literary sources as a structural framework for his visual imagination. His work moved easily between different traditions of storytelling - from Old Norse imagery to The Thousand and One Nights to Dante's Inferno - while maintaining a consistent sensibility: bold, warm palettes, figurative compositions with a theatrical sense of space and gesture.

His primary media were gouache and color lithography, and he also worked professionally as an illustrator and set designer. These parallel careers reinforced each other; his paintings carry a sense of designed space, and his illustrative work is never merely decorative. Swedish nature and folk poetry also fed into his practice, particularly in the later years, giving some works a quieter register alongside the more dramatically intense pieces.

Norryd died in Stockholm in 1989 at the age of 44, leaving a body of work that runs across a wide range of subjects but holds together through his distinctive use of color and his commitment to narrative. His art remained relatively close to the literary and mythological subjects that drove his debut, never abandoning the imaginative territory he staked out in that first exhibition.

At auction, Norryd's works appear primarily through Swedish regional houses including Helsingborgs Auktionskammare and Roslagens Auktionsverk, where his paintings and prints trade at accessible price points. The highest recorded sale in the Auctionist database reached 3,000 SEK for a watercolor of Riddarfjarden with the Royal Palace. His gouaches, lithographs, and literary-themed compositions make up the core of the available market.
