Margareth Sandström was born in 1950 in Sweden. Her father was a goldsmith, and growing up with direct exposure to the craft shaped her direction early. She trained at Strålnäs, the school run by the Swedish Jewellers' and Goldsmiths' Association in Mjölby, before continuing her education internationally at the Fachhochschule für Gestaltung in Pforzheim, Germany - a city historically known as a center of European goldsmithing - and then at the Koninklijke Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten in The Hague, Netherlands. It was in Pforzheim that she met the Dutch goldsmith Peter de Wit.

In 1973, Sandström and de Wit established a joint studio in Linköping, operating under the name Sandström & de Wit, Guld & Silversmedjan. The partnership has continued for more than five decades, producing a body of work that is regarded as among the most formally accomplished in Swedish jewelry art. Their styles are notably distinct but mutually reinforcing: de Wit works with a calculated, linear precision, while Sandström draws on organic forms and natural observation. Her surfaces tend to be soft and brushed, her shapes rounded and fluid. Faces are a recurring motif in her work - anonymous yet archaic, they give her pieces a quality that recalls both prehistoric art and contemporary abstraction.

Her materials of choice are silver and 18-karat gold, often set with closely spaced diamonds. The combination of meticulous metalwork and restrained ornament has given the studio an international profile. Sandström and de Wit have exhibited in Sweden, across Europe, in the United States, and in Japan. Their work has entered the permanent collections of Nationalmuseum in Stockholm and Röhsska museet in Gothenburg. In recognition of her contributions to the arts and her long relationship with the city of Linköping, Sandström was awarded an honorary doctorate by Linköping University.

Galleri Sebastian Schildt in Stockholm has represented the duo and hosted exhibitions of their work, most recently a joint exhibition in January and February 2023 marking fifty years of their partnership. The studio's association with Linköping is also documented by Linköping University, which has noted Sandström's half-century connection to the institution and the city.

At auction, Sandström's work sells primarily through houses active in eastern Sweden, particularly Olsens Auktioner and Gomér & Andersson in Linköping, reflecting her strong regional ties. Her 15 items in the Auctionist database include pendants, earrings, brooches, rings, and necklaces in sterling silver, 18-karat gold, and mixed materials. Top results include a pendant-and-earring set in silver that achieved 4,100 SEK and a pair of 18-karat gold earrings that sold for 3,200 SEK. The concentration of her auction activity in Linköping and Norrköping is consistent with the studio's base and collector community in the region.
